Hi Vegan Hacker SF fans!
The usual organizer is on the other side of the world this month, so we present to you
“Vegan Hacker SF- Mystery Adventure Edition!”
In plain language, this means that there is no set plan or organized food theme at this month’s Vegan Hacker (Tuesday October 30th at Noisebridge at 7pm)— it’s up to you!
Bring some random vegan ingredients and see what you can come up with once you arrive— or  coordinate with some friends ahead of time to make something amazing— or organize with other Vegan Hacker SF fans on our Facebook page (and “like” us if you haven’t already!)!
Stumped? May we suggest something Halloween related?

***Some Very Important Details***
*Noisebridge is a super-awesome space, so please clean up after yourself and be excellent to the other people there! The big weekly Noisebridge meeting starts at 8:00 on the night of Vegan Hacker, so we ask that you please switch to “indoor voices” at that time! Did we mention please clean up after yourselves?!
*Donations to Noisebridge (a non-profit supported by memberships and donations) are always appreciated! There’s a big donation box by the front door.
*Take pictures of your vegan culinary creations (and even culinary fails if you want!), and either “tag” us in Facebook posts or email them to Veganhackersf@gmail.com so we can put them on the website! Don’t forget to tell us what you hacked!
*No need to RSVP- just show up.
*Finally, just a quick reminder that “vegan” means that no animal products were used in the creation of the food. This includes meat, dairy products, honey, eggs, and more. If you’re new to this whole “vegan thing,” here’s a little more info.

Vegan Hacker- September 2012

September’s hack was pretty decadent!

The deep-frying process may not look too pretty on film (hey, we’re just keeping it real here!), but the results were delicious!

Thanks to everyone who came out!

Corndogs (part 2) And Donuts!

After a month’s break, we at Vegan Hacker are ready for some fun!

And by “fun,” we mean cooking.

And by “cooking,” we mean deep frying.

(And by “deep frying,” we mean that we’re focusing on the traditional oil-in-a-pan method, but if you want to try something else, that’s great, too. This is food hacking, after all!)

On Tuesday, September 25, at 7pm, we will be making Corn dogs and donuts! These two delicious foods are often chock full of animal ingredients. There are some delicious ready-made vegan brands of each of them available— but they are so seldom made from scratch at home! Is it the deep frying, is it the mess, is it the fact that we’re just not used to making them? Let’s find out together!

If you’ve been around awhile, a corndog hack may look familiar! Vegan Hacker’s first corndog hack was over a year ago in May 2011 !

Want to join us?

Email  us (veganhackersf at gmail dot com)  an RSVP with your name and the number of people in your party.

Vegan Donuts and corndogs FAQ

 1. What should I bring?

·      Bring the ingredients you’ll need to make vegan donuts and/or corndogs. This means the fake meat dogs of your choice, batter ingredients, dough ingredients, etc.

·      In terms of quantity, bring a bit extra so that you can swap with other people

·      We’re buying the canola oil in bulk. If you’re deep-frying, we’d love it if you could bring a dollar or two to contribute to the fund.

2. Is there some kind of fee?

No, participation is totally FREE. As mentioned in #1, if you’re using oil, $1 or $2 would be appreciated.  Also, donations to our host space, Noisebridge are always appreciated! They are a nonprofit & are entirely supported by donations and memberships.

 3. What should I bring?

Just bring yourself/ companions and the ingredients that you would like to turn into corndogs and donuts. Noisebridge has some basic kitchen supplies— but if you have a favorite tool that you can’t live without— bring it.

 4. What if I “can’t cook”/ have no idea what I’m doing?

Awesome! Vegan Hacker is all about experimentation! Also, people will be happy to help. We strive to be an easy-going and friendly and friendly event.

5. Help! I need a recipe!

Luckily, the internet is full of recipes. A quick ‘google’ of “vegan corndog recipe,” for example, will render a ton of results. Also, check out the public  library for  a LOT of vegan cookbooks that are available for free!

 6. So what/where is this Noisebridge place?

Noisebridge is a super-awesome 5,200 square-foot hacker space that contains an electronics lab, machine shop, sewing/crafting space, two classrooms, conference area, library, darkroom, and kitchen. Everyone is welcome to use the many resources. They’re a nonprofit, and we’re SO thankful that they host Vegan Hacker (for free!) on the last Tuesday of each month. Noisebridge is located at 2169 Mission Street in SF, about a block from the 16th & Mission BART. The space is on the 3rd floor and is accessible both by stairs and a freight elevator that typically works. When you get to the building, you’ll see a vaguely descriptive doorbell—type button at the front gate. Push it, look up into the video camera, and someone will buzz you in.

7. What if I have other questions? email us!

*Finally, just a quick reminder that “vegan” means that no animal products were used in the creation of the food. This includes meat, dairy products, honey, eggs, and more. If you’re new to this whole “vegan thing” and you’re not sure if something that you want to bring is vegan, shoot us an email (veganhackersf at gmail dot com) and we’ll let you know!

July’s Hack- Crispy Rice Treats!

The Upcoming hack falls on the last day of the month, and smack in the middle of Summer. To celebrate, we’re gonna skip a healthy meal and make desserts instead!

This month’s theme is vegan crispy rice treats. Traditional treats of this type are usually non-vegan because they are made with marshmallows (which almost always contain gelatin). Luckily, there are a lot of ways to create a similar treat— without the skin, bones, and feet (ha ha, bad vegan humor)!

Here are just a few examples of what other people have done:

example 1, example 2, example 3, example 4!

Feel free to get extra creative!

If you would like to join us this delicious event, send up an RSVP email with your name and how many people will be in your group. The dessert-themed Vegan Hacker SF events tend to fill up pretty fast, so you’ll want to RSVP ASAP!

What to bring: The ingredients you’ll need, a pan for the treats, friends if you want ‘em, and a big appetite for sweets. Plan to bring enough to trade and share a few crispy rice squares.

When: Tuesday, July 31 2012 at 7pm

Where: Noisebridge  (located at 2169 Mission Street in SF, about a block from the 16th & Mission BART. Vegan Burger Hacking!

June’s Vegan Burger hack was pretty awesome!

There were a ton of different burger varieties, with ingredients ranging from fake cheese to beans to eggplant to TVP to wheat to beets…  Some were baked, others were fried, and still, others were deep-fried…

Here’s a partial photographic summary:

June’s Hack: Vegan Burgers!!

What could be nicer at the end of a busy summer day than to heat up a pre-made frozen veggie burger, pop it into a bun, add a condiment or two, then hork it down within a minute or two while watching reality TV reruns on your computer at home?

Making your own! In a group! At Vegan Hacker on Tuesday June 26th at 7PM!

There are many delicious options for homemade vegan burgers, ranging from the simple grilled portabella mushroom (or marinated tofu slab), to the more complex (but still easy to make)  blends of TVP and nuts and beans or something.  Perhaps you want to make a raw burger, a post-modern dessert burger, or a fakin’ bacon burger!

At June 26th’s Vegan Hacker, we are hungry for it all.  RSVP Today!

Also, this is a BYOBB edition of vegan hacker (the last two B’s stand for “beverages” and “buns”)!!! Beverages may be alcoholic, but please keep in mind that both Noisebridge and this event are all-ages— and also that there are lots of dangerous objects (so please don’t get wasted and accidentally get into an altercation with someone’s projectile-shooting homemade robot!). In terms of buns, bring your favorite kind— or bring the ingredients to make some (an oven and baking sheets are available)! Maggie of VH will bring a batch or two of dough (the type has yet to be decided) for some buns, but probably not enough for everyone. Also, it’s not a “b,” but Maggie will also bring some homemade ketchup— and y’all should bring any other condiments that you may desire.

How it’s gonna work

Attendees will strive to arrive at 7 with ingredients for their vegan burgers in-hand. A brief announcement will be made. People will make their burgers while socializing and sharing ideas (The kitchen at Noisebridge has basic kitchen supplies, an oven, and an induction stove (with an induction stove you can only use a cast iron or stainless steel pan- the stove won’t heat other materials). People will share and eat their burgers (maybe we can even make mini-burgers to increase the variety that we each get to taste) . We’ll clean up.  Leftovers will be taken home or given to the hungry hackers of Noisebridge. Everyone will be happy.

Do you want to participate?

Awesome! just email  us (veganhackersf at gmail dot com)  with your name and the number of people in your party. If you already know what you’re bringing, let us know too!

5/29’s hack was awesome!

Vegan Hacker’s “Fries and Dip” event was a success!

We not only had fries made from plantains and multiple kinds of potatoes— we also had deep fried vegan cheese curds!” We enjoyed regular ketchup, curry ketchup, a spicy veganaise-y dip, and miso gravy! It was amazing!

Here is a brief visual recap:

Next Hack: 5/29/2012 @ 7pm!

Everywhere else in the country, the start of Spring means that the birds are chirping, the trees are sprouting new leaves, and that the sun shines warmly on peoples’ skin as they lounge for hours at the park or the beach. People in these other places have aready started wearing tank tops and shorts, moved their sandals to the front rows of their shoe racks, and have freshly-made popsicles chilling in their freezers at this very moment.

Those of is in San Francisco, on the other hand, are still donning fleece and double layers.  We sleep in flannel and wrap our hands around hot cups of coffee and tea for the warmth as much as the caffeine. We know that it may look bright and sunny outdoors, but  that the pretty blue sky shoots out wind like ice daggers. Sure, on a good day we can leave the house at noon in a t-shirt and jeans— but we know that by 4:00 pm we’ll be wishing that we’d brought a parka.

This is why we need comfort food! Come to Vegan Hacker on Tuesday May 29th to make vegan fries and dip! Relive those (warm) comforting days you spent in the fast food joint at the mall or the snack shack on the beach— without all the sketchy animal products and questionable ingredients!

How it’s gonna work

First, at 7pm on Tuesday May 29th, Maggie of Vegan Hacker SF will begin the event with a demonstration of how to make some easy oven fries and a very, very plain and basic home-made ketchup (so cheap and easy!).

Next, participants will make and share their own ketchup/dips and fries. Creative thinking is encouraged (Poutine! Tater tots! Cheesey fries! Curry Fries! Carrot fries?)! Vegan Hacker will supply a small quantity of (normal russet-type) potatoes and tomato paste, but it’s probably best if people bring their own array of items to turn into fries and dip (this ensures variety!). Also, if you want to deep fry the fries (instead of baking them), be sure to bring some oil!

Finally, we will EAT. Yummmm!

Do you want to participate?

Awesome! just email  us (veganhackersf at gmail dot com)  with your name and the number of people in your party. If you already know what you’re bringing, let us know too!
